An Austrian sailor (60) was rescued by a fire brigade helicopter on Saturday afternoon after an accident on board a boat. He will remain in hospital for the time being.
A 60-year-old was sailing about twelve miles off the Italian coast of Mester when strong gusts of wind hit him in the head with the underside of the mainsail.
The man suffered a head injury and the rain and cold quickly caused him to become hypothermic. A group traveling with him called the emergency services, who preferred to intervene by helicopter given the rough seas.
Spectacular rescue
The firefighters reached the sailboat on board the helicopter “Drago 1”, one of them lowered himself onto the deck of the boat with the winch and picked up the injured man. The sailor was then flown to Mestre hospital.
The Austrian, whose origins were unknown, was not in mortal danger. However, he remains under observation due to the blow to the head, it was said.
