A one-year-old baby fell from the third floor of a house in Vienna-Floridsdorf into a meadow on Saturday morning and is believed to have broken a bone. A passerby noticed the screaming toddler and alerted rescuers.
Police said an older sister was caring for the child and another sibling. The young woman briefly left the room when the toddler apparently climbed on the windowsill and fell out. “The older sister thought the window was closed,” said police spokesman Christopher Verhnjak.
The baby received first aid from the emergency services. The child was taken to hospital with a suspected hip fracture. There was no danger to life.
Ninth lintel this year
This means that nine children have already fallen out of windows in Austria this year, compared to ten in the previous year, according to data from the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV). On average, a child falls out of a window every four to five weeks in Austria and 13 have died in the past ten years, according to the KFV.
“We therefore urgently appeal to parents to be particularly careful when airing and to take preventive precautions – such as installing window locks,” said Othmar Thann, director of the KFV, in a statement.
