Snow and power outages – the onset of winter has Styria firmly under control

Date:

In mid-April, clearance vehicles are suddenly on the road in Styria again! It snowed at low altitudes last night – motorists should be careful and households without electricity should be patient.

Tuesday morning’s commute will be difficult for many: an Italian low is currently moving through Styria, causing rain and snowfall. In southwestern Styria, some lowlands turned white overnight. A surprising start to winter after maximum temperatures of above 30 degrees in the first half of April.

To prevent chaos on the streets, Asfinag took its snow-clearing vehicles out of the garage again at the beginning of this week. There is currently almost 50 centimeters of snow on the infamous Packsattel – which can be seen on the webcams. The state warning center also appeals to all Styrians: “Avoid unnecessary car journeys and be aware of the dangers of winter road conditions.”

There are also remarkable photos from the deep south of Styria: In Eibiswald a clearing vehicle pushes mountains of snow in front of it. “Some school bus connections have been stopped for today,” Mayor Andreas Thürschreiler reports. Above all, the risk of snow damage should not be underestimated.

There have also been power outages in the southwest since the early morning hours. About 100 transformer stations and 3,400 households are affected. “The emergency services are on site and are working to repair the damage,” says Energie Steiermark.
