The now outdated building materials do not leave one of Venice’s most important sights unscathed. Now parts of reinforced concrete have fallen from the bell tower – there is said to be no immediate danger.
The material, which dates back to 1902 and was considered revolutionary at the time, was used in the reconstruction of the inner frame of the spire, daily Il Gazzettino reported on Wednesday.
However, the architect in charge of the cathedral’s security, Mario Piana, ruled out any danger in the short or medium term.
The inventory must be secured
“However, we want to gather all the necessary information to plan consolidation measures that will ensure that the reinforced concrete used at the beginning of the 20th century will last another 100 years,” said Piana. An investigation into the condition of the spire was ordered.
The foundation of the bell tower, which was reinforced with titanium inserts ten years ago, is also being checked.
