This year’s Central Matura season starts next week for more than 41,000 young people. According to a current survey, high school graduates see little use in the marathon exams: for 70 percent, the high school diploma in its current form is outdated and in need of modernization. Mathematics remains the biggest fear subject.
About one in three of the 729 respondents advocates fewer exams, adjustment of the compulsory subjects and would like the mathematics exam to no longer be compulsory.
Mathematics remains a terrifying subject
The latter is still the biggest fear topic. According to research presented by the Lernquadrat tutoring institute on Wednesday, every second secondary school student is afraid of this. Overall, six out of ten respondents in the survey were nervous, but were confident that with proper preparation they could pass the Matura.
According to the research, almost a fifth of them appear unable to complete the Matura. The most stressful thing is the fear of blacking out or not understanding the information.
Pre-scientific work is praised
The pre-scientific work (VWA) – in addition to the written exams and the oral Matura, the third pillar of the ‘standardized competency-based maturity and diploma exam’ introduced at the AHS in 2015 and at the BHS in 2016 – is largely regarded by respondents as useful seen: 82 percent have it. According to her, she has learned something from it. At the same time, almost nine in ten respondents indicate that the VWA, which must be submitted no later than the beginning of the second semester, causes even more stress during the Matura year.
Use of AI
According to the study, boys and poor students in particular used the ChatGPT chatbot when writing, totaling more than a third of respondents. 40 percent reject the use of AI at VWA; Nearly a quarter tried ChatGPT, but were dissatisfied with the result.
Only a minority of high school students surveyed (40 percent) feel well prepared for life after school. One point of criticism is that too little everyday knowledge (for example dealing with money) is conveyed and that what has been learned is applied in practice. At the same time, three-quarters of respondents assume that they will forget most of what they learned for the Matura immediately after the exam, because they have to learn a lot in a short time
