The Italian carabinieri have apparently dealt a major blow to a gang of smugglers. Raids took place in several provinces. The suspects are accused of human trafficking. The carabinieri said on Wednesday that searches had been ordered for two suspects living in Austria.
The Carabinieri, in collaboration with the Organized Crime Brigade of Brasov (Romania), carried out searches of several suspects in the Italian provinces of Udine, Brescia and Vicenza.
Two Egyptians and a Pakistani were reported living in Italy. The carabinieri said on Wednesday that searches had been ordered for two suspects living in Austria.
45 migrants discovered
The investigation was launched by the Udine Public Prosecutor’s Office after 45 migrants were discovered at the Italian-Slovenian border near the municipality of Cividale del Friuli (Udine province). The goal is to investigate evidence of a larger smuggling organization with branches into Romania.
The migrants paid significant amounts of money for the smuggling through international money transfer rings. The investigation was carried out in collaboration with the Europol and Eurojust agencies, the carabinieri said.
The defendants include three Pakistanis living in Romania and fifteen other Pakistanis and Romanians who are alleged to have been responsible for transporting migrants to Romanian, Italian and Austrian territory.
The illegal immigrants were initially smuggled into Romania on work visas, where they were fictionally employed in companies linked to the organization. The people were then hidden in trucks and taken to Italy and Austria.
