Shock for a man in Schrems in the Gmünd district (Lower Austria)! He caught two burglars red-handed who wanted to steal his car. While he tried to stop the duo, he was dragged by the moving car.
The Waldviertler will certainly not forget this evening. On January 25 around 3 a.m., he surprised two burglars who wanted to steal his unlocked car from the garage of his single-family home in the municipality of Schrems in the Gmünd district. The burglar duo was reversing the car out of the garage when the owner suddenly caught them red-handed. The man allegedly opened the driver’s door of his car and a brief scuffle ensued with the driver. According to police, the victim was dragged for a short distance in the moving vehicle.
While trying to escape, a second car parked next to the garage was hit. The driver fled on foot and his accomplice also ran away. The two strangers tried to steal the car again, but this time the car key was missing.
Duo struck in Lower and Upper Austria
The attempted theft is the work of a duo who have committed numerous burglaries in Lower Austria and Upper Austria since January. According to police, the suspects are a 27-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man from the Czech Republic. They are said to have struck mainly in the Waldviertel and Linz. The damage amounts to approximately 60,000 euros. The couple was arrested in their ‘loot warehouse’, a rented apartment in Heidenreichstein in the Gmünd district.
Electric stun gun and bat found
Investigators discovered that the two had committed fourteen completed burglaries and six attempted burglaries, one attempted theft and one count of aggravated theft, one burglary of a residential building, and that they had prohibited weapons (bats, stun guns) and had committed money laundering. The burglars targeted crime scenes in several communities in the Waldviertel districts of Horn, Gmünd, Waidhofen an der Thaya and Zwettl, as well as in the city of Linz.
The two mainly stole power tools, scooters, e-bikes and also two cars. According to the police, the duo sold some stolen items in Prague and most of the stolen items were returned to the victims.
The 27-year-old and the 31-year-old have largely confessed. They were taken to Krems prison.
