The stuff that many dental visitors have nightmares about: During an actually innocent visit to the practice, a man would have to have an implant inserted. However, the operation went wrong and was almost fatal.
The 40-year-old man came to the practice because of acute toothache. The doctor did not hesitate for long, pulled a tooth and immediately recommended placing an implant.
The patient had complete confidence
“The doctor told me that he has been a doctor for 24 years and is an expert in this field. We trusted him and left this task to him,” the patient told “Hürriyet”.
Bones are cracked ‘normally’
However, the routine procedure went horribly wrong: shortly before the incident, the doctor explained to his assistant that a device had malfunctioned and that he would therefore perform the procedure manually. Accordingly, he forcefully screwed the screw into the jawbone. The patient noticed that the bones were cracking, but the doctor said this was normal.
The news portal “Politic Türk” shared an x-ray showing the screw in the head on the X platform (formerly Twitter):
What those involved did not know was that the doctor accidentally drilled a screw into the man’s brain, the Turkish news agency IHA reports. The man survived the ordeal.
Doctor disappears, does not want to take over emergency surgery
He told the IHA he screamed in pain after the doctor drilled through his jaw. “The screw got stuck in the area where the cerebrospinal fluid is behind the eye wall,” he explained. The doctor finally x-rayed him, discovered the error and immediately took him to a hospital. Then he disappeared.
During an operation that lasted several hours, the screw was removed and the patient was saved, IHA writes. The father of two said he has taken legal action against the doctor, who has so far refused to reimburse him for the treatment costs.
