The sacrifice of a chicken to the Aztec rain god Tlaloc during a ceremony in front of the Senate building in Mexico City has sparked political anger in Mexico. It was said that the purpose of the ritual was to ask for rain. The country has been experiencing drought for weeks.
The unusual scene was broadcast on Parliament’s online networks on Wednesday (local time), with a participant slitting a chicken’s throat to collect the blood to the beat of the drums. Senator Adolfo Gómez of the ruling Morena party invited people to the ritual.
The ritual slaughter of the chicken in front of the Senate building was shared on social media by journalist Leticia Robles de la Rosa (posted at X below).
Animal protection organization announced demo
Senate leadership distanced itself from the event. The Senate “could in no way approve such an approach” and would therefore take punitive measures against Gómez. This was justified on the grounds that the Mexican Constitution provides for “respect for the traditions of the indigenous population”.
Animal rights activists, in turn, emphasized that all animal sacrifices and animal cruelty are prohibited in Mexico City. The animal protection organization Anima Naturalis announced a demonstration in front of the Senate building to demand Gómez’s resignation.
