Mansplaining phenomenon: Men explain to athletes how to run better

Date:

Julia Mayer ran the Vienna City Marathon in a time of 2:31:25 – even though she was on her period. It wasn’t long before she started receiving countless unsolicited tips from men on how she could have done things better. The phenomenon is not new and is called ‘mansplaining’.

Anyone who reads current news articles on social networks and the comments below cannot ignore runner Julia Mayer. The 31-year-old from Bad Fischau only started running six years ago and has been winning one after another ever since. Mayer has already become twenty-time domestic champion and has four Austrian records to his name. She also finished the Vienna City Marathon last weekend in tenth place and as the second best European woman.

“It was a difficult match. I have been running with my period again, the past two days have already been tough,” the top athlete said afterwards. In light of this, she “ran a really great race. I am incredibly proud of my body today.” In 2020, she took a leave of absence from teaching and has been a professional athlete ever since. So you’d think Julia Mayer would know what she’s doing, right? But that’s exactly what some men seem to deny her.
