Accident in cellar – explosion in municipal building in Vienna – man injured

Date:

The explosion of a gas-air mixture led to an accident with a seriously injured man in a municipal building in Vienna on Saturday. According to the Blue Light organizations, the incident took place in a basement of a community building on Jedlersdorfer Straße in the Floridsdorf district. According to emergency services, all evidence so far pointed to an accident and not a deliberately caused explosion.

The approximately 50-year-old man may have previously handled a gas cylinder in the basement. As a result of the explosion and the outbreak of a fire, the victim suffered burns all over his body. He was seriously injured and taken to a hospital in Vienna. However, there should be no danger to life, according to the Vienna Professional Rescue Service.

No other person injured
As a precaution, the rescue team with 14 teams was on site, but no other injuries were reported. There were probably no other persons in the basement at the time of the accident.

Several windows were shattered
According to the Vienna Fire Department, some windows in the building were broken by the pressure wave. Structural engineers are now working to check whether the building’s structure has been damaged. According to police, the large-scale operation led to a traffic blockade in the area.
