Date:

The workers denounce that the asbestos removal work carried out in recent years has not guaranteed the cleanliness of the facilities and the safety of the workers.

The CAF works council has a appeal to trade unions and political parties so they fight for it renewing asbestos removal protocols of facilities contaminated by this material, as in the coming years many such actions will take place in companies, facilities, schools, etc. for comply with European regulations.

The representatives of the CAF Works Council made this request during a press conference that they offered this Monday in Beasain on the occasion of the celebration of the International Occupational Health Day The last Sunday.

During their speech, attendees read out a statement emphasizing that “for asbestos removal work to be safe, it is necessary that the protocols and their supervision are effective,” after it was “demonstrated” that the current “cannot be guaranteed to be carried out safely” ” which performed in the CAF last August, when it had to be done temporarily closes three warehouses at the Beasain factory after detecting asbestos contamination.

“If this is not enough, when analyzing the asbestos removal carried out at the factory in recent years, we see that the ships had not been properly cleaned at the time of the execution of the work,” they added, and therefore conveyed their “concerns” to the company, which “did not seek solutions” and reported to Osalan and the Labor Inspectorate about the situation of an “imminent risk” that existed. in these facilities.

The works council has denounced that “taking into account what this situation means economically, The company put production ahead of shutting down and protecting workers’ health” and that “the measures were adopted late, putting hundreds of workers at risk of inhaling asbestos fibers.”

They also reminded that “61 CAF employees have died due to working under the influence of asbestos“, in a situation that “unfortunately seems to have no end.”

For this reason, the committee demands that employees who worked until the ban on the use of asbestos in 2001 and those who were exposed to this substance during the cleaning work carried out are ‘recognized’ by the company and included “on the official list of ‘possibly exposed’ to conduct medical health surveillance”.

“On the other hand,” the statement continues, “we demand that, as in the case of asbestos, the reduce coefficients to those who have worked in unfavorable sanitary conditions, and the claim of the compensation fund made for workers infected with asbestos”.
