US President Joe Biden has urged his negotiating partners Qatar and Egypt to reach a hostage deal with the Islamist Hamas.
Biden called on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to “do everything in their power to secure the release of the hostages held by Hamas,” the White House said on Monday evening (local time ).
This is currently the only obstacle to a ceasefire and assistance to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. If an agreement accepted by Israel were to be reached, the US would do everything in its power to ensure its compliance. Biden also emphasized in a conversation with al-Sisi that Palestinians should not be expelled outside the Gaza Strip.
Biden’s spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre had previously called on Hamas to agree to the ceasefire proposal in the Gaza war. “New progress has been made in the talks in recent days, and currently the responsibility actually lies with Hamas. There is an offer on the table and they have to accept it,” she said.
Offer for a 40-day ceasefire
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Hamas on Monday made an offer for a 40-day ceasefire. Following the recent negotiations in Cairo on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, responses from Israel and Hamas are still pending.
A Hamas delegation left the Egyptian capital late on Monday to speak to the militant Islamist organization’s leadership about the latest revised proposal.
Some changes had been made to the conditions for a final ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to the Palestinian group’s demand for an Israeli withdrawal. A response from Hamas is expected within two days.
