It should have been a normal tennis evening, but suddenly a 63-year-old Tyrolean collapses while serving due to cardiac arrest! His friends begin emergency life-saving measures. Together with the rescue team, the man was successfully resuscitated.
It was March 19 when Oswald M. was playing tennis with some friends in the Silberberg tennis hall in Schwaz in the evening. But then he collapsed during a serve. His friends alerted emergency services and immediately started CPR. It was life-saving for Oswald, as it turned out.
Without first aid there is no chance of survival
“His friends saved his life; without them we would have been powerless,” explains paramedic Hannes Hochschwarzer, who was on duty that day. “It takes a few valuable minutes before we are alerted and arrive on the scene. Every minute the chance of survival drops by ten percent,” Hochschwarzer explains. The emergency medical team, which arrived at the same time as a Samaritan Association ambulance three minutes after the alarm, was immediately referred to the emergency patient. After some time of joint resuscitation, Oswald was admitted to the clinic in Innsbruck in a stable condition.
Meeting with the rescue team after more than five weeks
More than five weeks later, Oswald still cannot remember the exact events. Now he and his wife Silvia met the rescue team that, along with first responders, saved his life. We got to know each other over coffee and cake at the police station in Schwaz, including a tour of the building and vehicles. “I am happy that the emergency services present responded so quickly and started the rescue chain. The rescuers gave everything, otherwise I wouldn’t be here today. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am,” he saidthe 63 year old.
The emergency team was also very happy, Hochschwarzer explains: “Usually we don’t hear anything about the outcome or course of our emergency patients. It is all the more pleasant that Oswald contacted us and we were able to exchange ideas. We wish him all the best and good health!”
Free first aid course for Oswald and his wife
Oswald’s friends, including company first aiders, showed what you can achieve with first aid. With regular refresher courses there was no doubt about what to do next.
“We would like to take a first aid course soon,” said Oswald and his wife Silvia in unison. “The Schwaz Red Cross would like to welcome them both to a course. We cordially invite you both to take a course. We will reimburse the costs,” says general manager Astrid Stecher.
