The subject of the lawsuit was not only arson, there were also other crimes, such as multiple joyrides in other people’s cars. Three young people confessed and explained themselves.
On Tuesday, the judge at the regional court asked for the details of the three young suspects (18, 17, 17 years old). It is striking: they all had problems in their youth and no male caregiver. One grew up without a father, another was thrown out by his mother and the third lives in a supervised shared apartment. “We had nothing and nothing to lose,” says one of the defendants about the motive.
Backed into the police car
All three must answer for a series of crimes committed between February 3 and September 19, 2023: bodily harm, coercion, damage to property, theft, unauthorized use of vehicles and resistance to state power. According to the criminal complaint, the teens stole valuables from eight unlocked vehicles. There were three cars driving around, including a craft van. During a chase, they even collided with a civilian police patrol while reversing. One said: “We used the cars to get home at night as there were no trains running anymore.”
In addition to some scuffles with peers, one of the three also lit up in a solarium. The consequences: more than 200,000 euros in damage. As a result, the 17-year-old already had 40,000 euros in debt at the start of his internship. After the confessions, all three promised reforms and “a crime-free future.” A previously innocent 17-year-old was given a diversionary order, while the other two were given probation for one and six months respectively.
