House Republican Leader Mike Johnson is facing a vote of no confidence after his support for a multi-billion dollar package for Ukraine. Radical Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Wednesday that she would impeach the speaker next week.
“I can’t wait to see how Democrats support a Republican leader,” said the staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump. Greene made a similar proposal in late March, after Johnson facilitated a vote in the House of Representatives on a budget package that Republican hardliners rejected.
Trumpist carries out threat
Greene had initially only done this as a “warning”, but had already announced that he would go further if Johnson allowed a vote on US aid to Ukraine. Here’s what happened about a month later: The US Congress approved billions in aid for the country attacked by Russia.
Leading Democrats in the House of Representatives said on Tuesday that they supported Johnson and would block Greene’s motion if the 49-year-old were to pass. The Republicans only have a wafer-thin majority in the House.
Will the Democrats help?
Johnson cannot therefore afford more than two opponents in his group during a vote. The Democrats’ aid will likely come as a quid pro quo for Johnson’s support for aid to Ukraine, which he previously blocked for months. Removing a speaker again would have serious consequences. Important laws would likely remain on hold for weeks.
The 52-year-old only took over the office, which ranks third in the United States after the president and his vice president, about six months ago. Democrats refused to support his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy. He was removed from office in a historic vote in early October.
