Two wild birds built a nest in Moosstrasse. However, Salzburg AG, the Salzburg energy giant, removed it – it was ‘just a few branches’. The residents have made replacements and are angry because Salzburg AG did not think to help the storks and the birds have now disappeared.
Neighbors on Obermoosweg and Wildmoosweg in Leopoldskron were surprised: on April 14, a pair of storks started building a nest on an electricity pole. In Salzburg, wild birds are still an extremely rare phenomenon.
After more than three days, so many branches had flown in that the team was already taking longer breaks in the new nest on the Obermoosweg, overlooking the lush meadows towards the Almkanaal.
The idyll was suddenly disturbed a little later: “Salzburg AG came and simply pushed the nest down from the mast,” sad bird lovers reported to the “Krone” and also provided photographic evidence. And: “Children have already named the couple Fridolin and Elsa, held them in their hearts and shed tears when the nest was destroyed.”
Skilled residents sprang into action, making a replacement shelter from a building grid, wire and branches and placing it about ten meters high in the crown of a neighboring fir tree. “Fridolin looked at it, but we haven’t seen anything since April 22,” the concerned residents say. Salzburg’s energy supplier states that there were “only a few branches” and no nest. Moreover, one evening there was a short circuit in the 110kV mast because of the storks.
“For safety reasons, we also acted for animals”
“The branches were also removed for the safety of the storks,” says a spokeswoman for Salzburg AG. However, the residents are very angry. Tenor: If the energy giant had immediately started looking for replacement housing based on the Burgenland or Styria model, the departure of Fridolin and Elsa would probably have been prevented.
