Flights in May – The federal army tests the Eurofighter in the supersonic range

Date:

In May, the pilots of the Federal Army with their Eurofighter fighter jets will conduct two weeks of supersonic training throughout Austria – with the exception of the states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg and the metropolitan areas. The Air Force announced this on Thursday.

Interception maneuvers will be trained from May 6 to 10 and from May 21 to 24. Two supersonic flights are scheduled every day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The maneuvers are flown under real physical loads, which cannot be depicted in the simulator, the report said.

The close and extremely time-critical coordination between military pilots, radar control officers and military and civilian air traffic control is also an essential goal of the training. The flight areas would be determined in collaboration with civil air traffic control. To keep the noise level as low as possible, we fly at high altitudes.

Flight at an altitude of 12,500 meters
There are no training flights at supersonic speeds on weekends and holidays. The flights are conducted at an altitude of 12,500 meters to minimize the occurrence of sonic boom on the ground.

The supersonic speed starts at about 1200 km/h. As a Eurofighter approaches this speed, shock waves are created on the aircraft. These shock waves can be detected on the ground as sonic booms. The (loud) strength of the sound boom depends, among other things, on the height, the terrain structure and the weather conditions.

In case of noise complaints or damage, the army asks you to contact the PR department of the Styrian Military Command (0664 622 3304).
