A missing 29-year-old alpinist from Bavaria could only be found dead in the evening hours on Thursday. The experienced ski mountaineer crashed on the Hohen Tenn (3368 m) near Fusch on the Großglocknerstrasse (Salzburg).
Since shortly after 7 p.m. it has become certain: the missing alpinist from Bavaria in the Hohe Tauern near Fusch/Glocknerstrasse was found dead before nightfall by members of the Fusch mountain rescue team and rescued by helicopter.
“In the afternoon we discovered his sleeping bag at an altitude of about 2,500 meters in the Hirzbachtal,” says Paul Hasenauer from the Fusch mountain rescue service. There was currently no trace of the man from Miesbach/Bavaria. Around 7 p.m., emergency services from the helicopter finally discovered the dead alpinist at an altitude of about 2,900 meters. The man probably fell during the climb to the Hohen Tenn (3368 m) and slipped on rocky and steep terrain. He was rescued by the helicopter team before nightfall.
Father called the emergency services
The experienced and well-equipped ski mountaineer traveled alone through the region and camped several times in recent days. He had spoken to his father on the phone on April 30. When the man stopped calling on Wednesday, the father notified the emergency services. The mountain rescuers had been on duty since the early morning hours on Thursday.
The district administration, and especially the disaster management department, coordinated the Alpine police, mountain rescue services and the Red Cross crisis intervention team. Some of the man’s relatives were treated at the scene by the Red Cross team. Two helicopters from the police and the Ministry of the Interior were also deployed.
