A 34-year-old from Vorarlberg kept the Swiss police in St. Margrethen, just across the border with Vorarlberg, on their toes early Friday morning. The man gave chase in a stolen car.
The 34-year-old from Vorarlberg drove towards Thal in St. Margreten in a previously stolen car on Friday morning around 5 a.m. He was already driving at extremely high speeds. The driver lost control at a roundabout and crashed into a tree on the side of the road. This was in turn observed by a police patrol. Because the driver simply continued driving, the officers gave chase.
The man deliberately ignored the driver’s requests to stop and continued to accelerate. At the next roundabout the car was thrown off the road again. The car broke through a fence, crashed into a parked car and eventually came to a complete destruction in a parking lot.
Short escape on foot
Still unwilling to give up, the driver got out of the wreckage and fled on foot. This venture, however, was not crowned with success; after a few meters the handcuffs clicked. The Vorarlberger was classified by Swiss officials as ‘unfit to drive’. Moreover, he did not have a driver’s license.
Advertised for search
Further investigation revealed that the man was even being searched for in Austria. That is why he has already been handed over to the Austrian authorities. The material damage caused amounts to approximately 28,000 euros.
