According to research, former US President Donald Trump’s lobby has so far spent significantly more money on election ads than Joe Biden’s. More than 25 million dollars (equivalent to 23.26 million euros) for television and online spots compared to 15 million (13.95 million euros) for other advertising.
These figures come from Federal Election Commission documents. The lobby groups operate alongside the actual election campaigns of the candidates. The largest of these are called Super Pacs – the abbreviation stands for ‘Political Action Committee’. These organizations, among other things, place large amounts of election advertisements, but are not allowed to coordinate with the candidate. Unlike election campaigns, they are allowed to collect unlimited amounts.
At the end of April, Democrat Joe Biden’s campaign said it had $84 million (equal to €78.14 million) in its campaign coffers, while the Trump camp had reported $49 million (€45.58 million) at the time. Both will present updated figures on Thursday.
More money than from the official campaign
For comparison: according to an insider, the largest Trump lobby organization has no less than 93.7 million dollars (87.16 million euros) at its disposal. So far, most of the funding has been spent on television and online advertising targeting Biden’s immigration policies and claiming the US president is too old for a second term. In contrast, the largest Biden lobby organization had 57 million dollars (53.02 million euros) in its treasury at the end of April. They spent 15 on election advertisements, while the Trump lobby has spent more than 25 million euros since March.
The presidential elections are on November 5. Biden and Trump are currently close in polls. However, Trump is slightly ahead in some US states that could make a difference.
