For now, the Israeli government is not sending a team to indirect negotiations with Hamas in Cairo. A delegation will only be sent once the Islamist organization has responded to the proposal for an agreement, according to a report.
However, Hamas representatives are already in Cairo. The content of the indirect negotiations, in which representatives from the US, Egypt and Qatar mediate, consists of the release of hostages and the cessation of hostilities in several stages. Until recently, Hamas called for a comprehensive ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government has so far rejected this.
Qatar questions the role of mediator
The Qatari government is already questioning its role as a mediator. The Hamas leadership has been based in the emirate since 2012 – an arrangement that dates back to an agreement with the US. According to people familiar with the matter, there are now considerations that Hamas may have to give up its political position in Qatar. The Washington Post previously reported that the US government had called for the group’s expulsion if it could not agree to a ceasefire with Israel.
However, Hamas appeared to be in a positive mood ahead of the indirect negotiations. The Israeli government is said to have given the terrorist organization a week to reach an agreement. Otherwise, the announced military offensive on the city of Rafah will be carried out (see video above), the Wall Street Journal reported late Friday evening.
