He wanted to hang up election posters for his party, but now German SPD MEP Matthias Ecke is in hospital. On Friday evening he was attacked by four men in Dresden and seriously injured (see video above). Their identity has now been established.
According to the police, the suspects are four young men between the ages of 17 and 20. They are all said to have worn dark clothing and could be attributed to a right-wing witness. A police spokesperson said on Saturday that the investigation was still ongoing.
As reported, the perpetrators beat the 41-year-old politician when he wanted to hang election posters. He was so seriously injured that he had to be operated on in hospital.
series of attacks
Minutes before the attack, the same group allegedly attacked a 28-year-old Green Party campaign worker who was also posting posters. The perpetrators hit and kicked him. He was also injured. Evidence that they are the same young men is provided by proximity in time and place and by similar personal descriptions.
It was only on Thursday evening that Kai Gehring, member of the Green Party of the Bundestag, and his party colleague Rolf Fliß were attacked after a party event in Essen. Green Party members had previously been attacked in Chemnitz and Zwickau while putting up election posters. A week ago on Saturday, an AfD member of the state parliament was beaten at an information stand.

Steinmeier: Stand together across party lines
Numerous politicians condemned the attacks. “This outbreak of violence is a warning. “All those who want to preserve our liberal democracy must now stand together with all parties against attacks and abuses in political competition,” said German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The security authorities and courts would do everything they can to investigate the attacks and hold the perpetrators accountable.
