Chinese state and party leader Xi Jinping arrived in France on Sunday afternoon. Talks with President Emmanuel Macron and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are scheduled for Monday. It will discuss, among other things, climate protection and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East (see video above).
Von der Leyen and Macron want Xi to have a moderating influence on the Kremlin. The Chinese government wants to break the Europeans away from their close alliance with the US. Moreover, our own relations with Europe need to be strengthened. Contact has deteriorated since the head of state’s visit five years ago. Concerns about human rights violations in China contributed to this. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Chinese government has also been accused of supporting the Russian government.
Macron: China important for peace
French President Emmanuel Macron said the aim of the talks was for China to work towards the stability of the international order. “We must (…) work together with China to create peace.” Macron and Xi will meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday (from 11am), and the two politicians will exchange ideas in pairs in the afternoon. .
Visits to Hungary and Serbia
A French-Chinese business meeting and a state banquet are planned for the evening. After his visit to France, Xi will travel to Serbia and Hungary. The Chinese government has been investing heavily in the two countries for years as they are part of the New Silk Road initiative, which aims to strengthen trade ties between Asia and Europe.
