Whit Monday there was a spectacular car accident in the neighboring Swiss canton of Graubünden. A 25-year-old had run off the road on Oberalpstrasse with his car, lifted off the edge of the site and, after landing in the Erlenstauden below, had been flipped several times. The completely destroyed car eventually came to a stop on its wheels 80 meters below the road.
Shortly before 12.15 pm, the 25-year-old Swiss drove alone on the winding Oberalpstrasse coming from the Oberalp pass towards Sedrun. In the bend to the left, the vehicle ended up over the edge of the road on the valley side for unknown reasons.
The car drove straight on over the gravel strip and further through meadows, where after about 20 meters it drove through the edge of the site and crashed into the alder trees below. The vehicle rolled over several times and rolled further down the slope, where it came to a stop about 80 meters below the roadway and was again completely damaged on its wheels. Miraculously, the driver was able to exit the wreckage under his own power and suffered only minor injuries.
After emergency medical assistance by the Swiss air rescue service “Rega”, the 25-year-old was rescued from the inaccessible area and immediately flown to the cantonal hospital in Graubünden in Chur. The cantonal police of Graubünden is investigating the exact circumstances that led to this traffic accident.
