The General Staff of the Russian Defense Ministry has started preparations for exercises “to increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear weapons to carry out combat missions” on behalf of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.
The Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that the background was provocative threats from the West. The military exercises also include the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. Units from the Southern Military Command and the Naval Forces were expected to participate. The exercises would take place “soon”, it was assured.
FT: Russia’s nuclear inhibition threshold is lower than expected
In late February, the Financial Times reported that secret documents on Russian tactical nuclear weapons had been passed on. The British daily stated that the threshold for its use by Russia was significantly lower than Russian authorities officially claimed.
The military could use tactical nuclear weapons in the event of an invasion by Chinese forces or to “deter states from aggression.” Moscow could also use this tool to prevent military conflicts from escalating.
