This Sunday is Mother’s Day! Traditionally, bouquets of flowers are given as gifts on this occasion. Behind the beautiful appearance there is often a real poison bomb: the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor warns about dangerous environmental toxins with which the colorful plants are in many cases contaminated.
A bouquet of flowers is a popular gift, and not just for Mother’s Day next Sunday. Even those with a bad conscience like to resort to flowers to make up for it. However, the Chamber of Labor now warns against careless purchasing based on appearance alone.
Cowardly rules
Because cut flowers mainly come from countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Ecuador. And of course, European regulations do not apply there. Employees at flower farms often have to handle toxic substances unprotected; some of them are even banned in the EU.
Only one “clean”
In the context of Mother’s Day, consumer activists and the environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 examined a total of 16 bouquets. The only thing that attracted positive attention was a bouquet of tulips from Austria, in which only one active substance of the pesticide was found. The others looked like a cocktail of pesticides.
Two-thirds infected
In two-thirds of the flower bouquets tested, 14 or more active insecticidal ingredients were found – in total there were more than 600 different “horrors”. Bouquets of flowers with the Fairtrade label were anything but clean.
Picking yourself is recommended
A tip from the experts: “Choose it yourself: a colorful meadow bouquet from your own garden comes from the heart and is not harmful to employees or the environment.”
