Another dangerous incident occurred during a TikTok challenge: children from the 5th and 6th grades of a primary school in Berlin allegedly strangled a classmate until she collapsed. The suspects tried to cover up the incident – an adult who happened to be passing by eventually raised the alarm.
The students took part in the so-called blackout challenge: someone is strangled until he is unconscious and a recording of this is published on the video platform. Children at a school in Berlin-Kreuzberg also wanted to try out this dangerous trend.
“One girl’s attempt went horribly wrong and she collapsed. […] Instead of helping her by asking the other children to help her, the children dragged her to a secluded place and tried to give the unconscious girl water,” the director warned in an email to parents, according to the Berlin newspaper “BZ”.
No permanent physical damage
When a classmate wanted to get help, she was prevented from doing so with threats. Fortunately, a father noticed the incident and informed the teacher and emergency services. “That the girl without help, […] (As things stand now) there is no permanent physical damage, which is nothing short of a miracle,” the director said.
The students who strangled the girl are suspended from school. The director argues for this step with the protection of the other children. Charges of bodily harm and failure to render aid are also being considered. The perpetrators are not yet criminally liable.
TikTok denies guilt
The headmistress appealed to parents: “Reenacting ‘challenges’ is not a game and at worst means harm, if not worse, for those involved. Children should be encouraged to say ‘no’ to such trends.”
The TikTok platform is not aware of any guilt: “This worrying ‘challenge’, which people seem to have heard about from sources other than TikTok, existed long before our platform existed and was never a TikTok trend,” they say . ‘, the spokeswoman quoted.
