The power outage that paralyzed Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district on Monday evening was caused by a faulty power cable connector. The lights went out just after 8pm. The situation was especially difficult in the Wurstelprater, where people got stuck in the rides, and in the Ernst Happel Stadium, where the international match between Austria and Denmark had to be postponed.
Wiener Netze worked through the night to repair the damage. The faulty connector was found under a sidewalk in the port access road. The ground was then dug up and the broken part replaced. According to the spokeswoman, up to 90 percent of the 1,500 affected households were already connected to the network by 9 p.m. Until now, for parts at the green Prater and at the Lusthaus, it was only just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Damage due to heavy rain
Technicians believe Sunday’s heavy rain could have caused the damage. Water may have seeped into the ground and damaged the connector. The exact cause is still being determined, the spokeswoman said.
The power failure was quite unpleasant for the passengers of the rides in the Wurstelprater. However, customers who got stuck were moved back to safe ground relatively quickly thanks to the use of emergency generators. According to a spokesperson, the Viennese professional fire brigade did not have to move.
