Artificial intelligence is not a lie detector

Date:

German experts warn against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to identify lies. As examples, psychologist Kristina Suchotzki from the University of Marburg and Matthias Gamer from the University of Würzburg mention surveys among people wanting to enter the EU at the EU borders or about suspects in criminal cases in the journal “Trends in Cognitive Sciences”.

Suchotzki told the German news agency that a corresponding technology has already been tested at the EU’s external borders – in Greece, Latvia and Hungary – with reference to the European border control project iBorderCtrl.

In general, Suchotzki and gamers mention several problems: AIs are a black box whose judgments cannot be understood from the outside and therefore cannot be verified. There is also a risk of incorrect results and a lack of theoretical substantiation, they say.

“The use of artificial intelligence in lie detection is based on the premise that it is possible to identify a clear indication or combination of indications that indicate deception,” Suchotzki said in a statement about the research. Decades of research have failed to identify such evidence.

“Pinocchio’s nose does not exist outside of books,” the duo emphasizes. There are no valid behavioral indicators that can be used to determine whether someone is telling the truth or not. Psychologists emphasize that traditional lie detectors, which aim to infer the truth of statements from physical responses such as blood pressure, heart rate and breathing, have long been considered unscientific.
