Artificial intelligence is not emerging, but it is there – so that students are not powerless against it, they learn in AI pilot schools how to use the new technology wisely. Because: Not only what we learn, but also how we learn changes over time. How AI affects daily school life – and how teachers respond.
“Banning artificial intelligence – that cannot be enforced,” says Hubert Lutnik, director of HTL Mössingerstrasse in Klagenfurt, in clear terms. And he is right, as many teachers tell us: “All homework exercises are written with AI” or “Students often do not notice that AI produces incorrect results” – statements like these are not uncommon. That’s why a teacher from Villach told “Kärntner Krone”: “The children want and need to know how to use AI.”
Precisely for this purpose – to teach students how to properly use this rapidly developing technology – 100 schools in Austria (see interactive graph below) were chosen to test and gain experience with AI software. The University of Graz is scientifically supporting the project and it is expected that other schools will benefit from the results. But what does that actually mean? How is the use of AI integrated into education – in all subjects, or only in some? And how are the lessons going?
