According to media reports, the British Ministry of Defense has fallen victim to a cyber attack. It involved a third-party payroll system, Sky News reported on Monday evening. This potentially compromises the banking information of all active military personnel and some veterans. That’s about 270,000 people, Politico reported.
Names and bank details were compromised, as were private addresses in several thousand cases. The BBC and the British news agency PA also reported on the cyber attack.
The government suspects that China is behind the attack, Sky News reports. Britain and the US accused China of “malicious” cyber attacks in March. Chinese hackers are believed to be responsible for an attack on the UK’s 2021 Election Supervisory Authority and for targeting British MPs’ email accounts.
There was initially no official confirmation of the new attack. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps would inform parliament in the afternoon, but would not name any perpetrators. Conservative MP and defense expert Tobias Ellwood told Sky News that China may be targeting the financially vulnerable to force them to cooperate in payments.
