Eighteen months after the collapse of a major highway bridge in the American city of Baltimore, the sixth and final fatality has been rescued. “It is with a heavy heart that today marks an important milestone in our rescue work,” a police spokesperson said on Tuesday evening.
At the end of March, the container ship ‘Dali’ rammed a support pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the 1.5-mile-long, four-lane highway bridge to collapse. Two people were rescued and six men were killed.
The victims were construction workers of Latin American descent who were making repairs to the bridge at the time of the accident. In recent weeks, recovery teams have found the bodies of the missing people – one after the other.
The damaged ship will soon be towed away
The damaged ‘Dali’ remains at the scene of the accident, but will be brought into the Port of Baltimore in the coming days so that shipping traffic can quickly return to normal. To do this, the bridge debris lying on the ship must be removed. At the same time, the investigation into the cause of the accident is in full swing. The 21-man crew of the ‘Dali’ from India and Sri Lanka is still on board the ship.
