Women arrested – After evacuation of protest camp: demonstration in front of the police building

Date:

After the pro-Palestinian protest camp on the campus of the University of Vienna was evacuated on Thursday evening, around 50 people gathered in the morning for an impromptu meeting at the Roßauer Lände police detention center. The activists demanded the release of three women who were temporarily arrested during the eviction and have been in police custody since then.

Traffic in the country was repeatedly blocked by the group on Thursday. As the afternoon progressed, the meeting broke up. Emergency services increased security until about 2 p.m., it was said. There were no incidents during the protest, which started around 10 a.m.

The three women were taken into custody to verify their identities – and continued to refuse to release their personal information. It has not been disclosed whether they were actually at the detention center or another government facility.

Activists sit on the road
Police spokesman Mattias Schuster described how the activists repeatedly blocked traffic by sitting on the roadway, but then released them. There was no risk of major traffic jams during the holidays anyway. The police were represented by, among other things, a standby unit and an operational unit with several dozen officers to secure the location.

At the beginning of the week, about 100 people pitched their tents after a “Pro-Palestine” demonstration on the campus of the old general hospital in the Alsergrund district. A counter-demonstration took place on Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday evening, security authorities ordered the camp’s dismantling after growing solidarity with Hamas’s goals was registered and the event no longer fell under the right to freedom of expression. The protest was also classified as a threat to public safety.
