Earlier this year, US intelligence agencies discovered plans by the Russian government to assassinate German Rheinmetall manager Armin Papperger (see video above). He has been under police protection for months and says he always feels safe.
Papperger said he was “a very happy man” after the alleged Russian plans became public. At a public appearance in Düsseldorf in May, the head of the arms company Rheinmetall was accompanied by several plainclothes police officers. Authorities ensured “a high level of security around my person,” the 61-year-old said after the CNN report on the alleged Russian plans broke.
Kremlin: “No serious justification”
The Kremlin denied the reports on Friday. “It is very difficult to comment on such rumors, which are based solely on anonymous sources without any serious justification,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “All this is presented in the style of more falsifications, so such reports cannot be taken seriously.”
The German Interior Ministry pointed out that there was a broad threat from Russia. There is talk of espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks and state terrorism.
Managers repeatedly in public
Rheinmetall is the number one German arms manufacturer. Its boss Armin Papperger seems very different from his colleagues: the 61-year-old repeatedly gives interviews and always patiently explains how important arms deliveries are to defend Western values. “The biggest success for me was how much we were able to help Ukraine. These people fight with their blood for the freedom of Europe,” he said recently.
Such statements are likely to be a thorn in the Kremlin’s side. With around 30,000 employees, Rheinmetall has so far produced tanks, anti-aircraft guns and artillery ammunition for Ukraine. In June, the company also opened a repair shop for armored personnel carriers in western Ukraine. On-site production of tanks is also planned.
Leftists set fire to the garden shed
“I am used to a lot,” Papperger told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. At general meetings of his company, “the office was broken”, and in April leftists set fire to his arbor. A letter of confession appeared. However, the possible plans of attack from Russia reach a completely different intensity.
