At least eight people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory in India on Thursday. Several others suffered burns, local media reported, citing authorities.
The investigation into the cause of the incident near the city of Sivakasi, about 500 kilometers southwest of the metropolis of Chennai, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, is still ongoing, a police spokesperson told local television channel NDTV.
Images from local media and videos on social media showed a large gray cloud above the building. Fireworks are popular in India, including during the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali.
“This is a licensed facility. She makes beautiful fireworks. We suspect that friction from mixing the chemicals led to the explosion. We are investigating,” a representative of the district authority told NDTV.
In India, fatal accidents occur again and again in fireworks factories, partly because safety measures are inadequate.
