Situation worsening – drone attacks on southern Ukraine and Crimea

Date:

In new airstrikes, Russia has attacked Ukraine with drones and cruise missiles. Three cruise missiles were fired at industrial facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Authorities in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, again reported Ukrainian drone strikes.

Anti-aircraft guns in Ukraine managed to shoot down most of the objects, including 20 drones, during the new airstrike, the Ukrainian Air Force in Kiev said. In Odessa on the Black Sea alone, 13 drones were destroyed. A 38-year-old man was injured in the town of Kryvyi Rih. The city has been the target of Russian attacks in the past, and an attack there on Tuesday killed 12 people.

In Crimea, according to local authorities, most of the nine drones have been shot down. A drone exploded in a village, shattering the windows of houses. No injuries were reported, Crimea governor Sergei Aksyonov said. According to the Tass agency, a child was killed in a Ukrainian attack in the partly Russian-controlled region of Kherson.

According to the General Staff in Kiev, the Ukrainian counter-offensive is focused on the Bakhmut regions of the Donetsk region and towards Berdyansk in the Zaporizhia region. Ukrainian troops have recently seized territory and liberated several cities from Russian occupation.

At the same time, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has begun his visit to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, according to Ukrainian operator Energoatom. Grossi’s visit to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has been postponed by a day for safety reasons, as the region is highly competitive.

“Fighting” for contracts
Meanwhile, British military experts say a pivotal moment may be imminent in the rivalry between the Russian army and Wagner’s mercenaries. According to the Defense Ministry’s daily intelligence report on the war in Ukraine in London, July 1 is the deadline for mercenaries in Russia to be contractually subordinated to the Russian Defense Ministry. However, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin made it clear that his fighters would not sign the contracts.
