Currently, the network requires continuous intervention to maintain stability, for example by starting up gas-fired power stations at short notice. In 2023, this meant 100 million euros in additional costs. The real scandal: these costs are imposed without batting an eyelid on end users throughout Austria. Moreover, this expansion of the networks has been criminally neglected by politicians for decades. “It is incomprehensible that we are only now realizing this,” criticizes an experienced local energy expert.
