After an apartment fire in Vienna at the end of February, the father initially went into hiding with his children (3, 5) and was found a short time later. Investigation by the Public Prosecution Service has now shown that the mother of the children is considered a suspect.
On a Monday afternoon in February, a 34-year-old was told that neither her husband was at work nor their two children in preschool. The woman drove to the apartment in Vienna-Floridsdorf and alerted the fire brigade because there was already a fire.
The fire brigade extinguished the fire after an hour and a half, but found no one in the apartment. The police then started a search for the father and the two children. Two days later, the Austrian was in Frankfurt, Germany, with his two-year-old daughter and five-year-old son.
Employees of the municipal department 11 (MA 11), which is responsible for child and youth welfare, returned the siblings to Austria a short time later. “They are doing well, the father is very cooperative,” the MA 11 spokeswoman emphasized at the time.
The Public Prosecution Service confirmed the investigation against the woman on Monday. However, a corresponding fire report is still pending, it said.
Is in general
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the mother accused of arson is currently at large. “There is no urgent suspicion and no reason for detention,” says spokeswoman Nina Bussek. There is no evidence of other suspects, but the woman denies the allegations, Bussek said.
MA 11 has been aware of the family’s situation since October 2023 and has likely been plagued by conflict for some time. The police had imposed an entry ban on the man at the time, but this was no longer active at the time of the fire. The 33-year-old reportedly reported to authorities that the mother was endangering the child’s well-being. Divorce proceedings are also sometimes pending.
