A female bear that killed a jogger in the Alps in Trentino, northern Italy, last year will be housed in a protected area in Germany. The authorities in the province of Trento announced this on Tuesday.
After the bear coded ‘JJ4’ killed the 26-year-old jogger in April 2023, Trent authorities ordered her captured and executed. The death sentence was blocked by legal objections from environmentalists.
“JJ4 will be moved in the fall,” Roberto Failoni, councilor for tourism and hunting in Trento, told the Corriere del Trentino newspaper. The bear will find a new home in the Worbis Bear Park in Thuringia. Since 2010, the mother of “JJ4”, the bear “Jurka”, has also been in the park in the Black Forest.
Animal rights activists criticize ‘climate of fear’
After “JJ4” was captured and taken to the “Casteller” nature center, the animal protection organization “Lav” became involved. The organization proposed to transport the animal at their own expense to the bear sanctuary “Libearty Sanctuary” in Zarnesti in Romania. Animal rights activists complained that a “climate of fear and hatred” against bears had been created in Trentino.
In Italy, since the death of the Trentino jogger, the debate about the coexistence of bears and humans has come to a head. Many people protested the original plans to kill “JJ4” and another issue carries the code “MJ5”.
The EU project had an impact
Animal rights activists repeatedly call for raising awareness about wildlife or establishing wildlife corridors. According to the province of Trento, the number of bears in the area has increased dramatically since the EU’s ‘Life Ursus’ project began 24 years ago. Instead of 50 as planned, about 100 wild animals have settled.
