“Private visit” – Nationalist performance by Edi Rama in Athens

Date:

An appearance by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in Athens caused an uproar in Greece. On Sunday he gave a speech to thousands of representatives of the Albanian minority in Hellas as part of a nationalist performance with the national anthem and flags at Galatasi’s Olympic Hall.

The appearance caused a stir in the media and also led to a large-scale police operation. There were more than a thousand officers on site. According to Albanian and Kosovar press reports, Rama was rather a unifier of peoples.

Accordingly, he explained that relations between the two countries are much closer than they appear. According to him, it is mainly the ‘dust’ raised by politicians from both countries that does not clearly show the ties between the two peoples.

The imprisoned politician responded with criticism
While the government in Athens, after initially critical statements by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and despite excited media reports, reassured that Rama’s visit was of a “private character” and would therefore not be commented on, the politician was imprisoned in Albania Dhionisios Alfred ‘Fredi’ Beleri, who belongs to the Greek minority there, responded with criticism. He called Rama’s appearance a “targeted” provocation.

Rama’s appearance was also seen as the beginning of a tour by Rama, which will also include similar engagements with the Albanian diaspora in other places and countries.

Albanians largest minority in Greece
With a population of up to one million people, Albanians in Greece are the largest minority in Greece with a total of around eleven million inhabitants.
