Britain’s Conservative government is reportedly planning to introduce a minimum age for sex education in schools. According to this principle, in the future, sex education should only be permitted from the age of nine. Topics such as trans identity should no longer be on the curriculum.
The Times reported that sexual intercourse before the age of 13 should no longer be discussed in schools. The BBC also reported on the plans on Wednesday, based on government sources.
Secretary of State Chris Philp declined to immediately comment on the reports. “But as a parent, I don’t want younger children in particular to be exposed to sexual content too early in the classroom,” Philp said in an interview on Times Radio on Wednesday.
Trans as a ‘political idea’?
On the issue of trans identity, he said it was “a controversial political idea that should not necessarily be taught as fact,” said the conservative politician, who is actually responsible for the police.
Teachers accused the government of using the issue as an election campaign. Sex education is not included in the curriculum before sixth form anyway, Rebecca Leek, the head of the Association of Primary School Principals in Suffolk, told the BBC. A primary school principal from the Yorkshire town of Rotherham described the move as an attempt to exploit the issue politically.
