A young girl in Carinthia endured incredible suffering before her death. Although she had a tumor in her foot the size of an apricot, her “loving parents” did not allow the disease to be diagnosed and it was left untreated by conventional medicine. Valerie (not her real name) died; My father and mother each received a one-year suspended prison sentence. They are appealing the verdict.
“In the 35 years that I have been a doctor, I have never experienced anything like this,” says an oncologist who treated the girl in the last days of her life. “It was a dying child who was brought to us in the hospital. The child could barely breathe, the tumors were visible and pain therapy would have been needed for a long time. But the father just said: it is what it is.” The doctors were so shocked by the behavior that they filed a complaint.
“Putting people above the well-being of the child”
The criminal proceedings at the Klagenfurt Regional Court clearly show that the parents – she is a lawyer, he is unemployed – have their own worldview. “Of course they don’t blame you. And also not that you did not love your child very much,” says prosecutor Ines Küttler. “The accusation is that you still put your opinion above the well-being of your child!”
Before her death, despite her obvious illness, the two of them had dragged Valerie to healers, energetics and alchemists, but not to a ‘normal’ doctor who would have to clarify what the tumor in her foot was. “You have not fully explained to your daughter what she is suffering from. Only after a diagnosis could she have decided what she wanted.”
The parents maintain that their daughter consciously chose this path. “She was very strong-willed,” it is always emphasized. “She wanted it that way.” At the age of 14, she decided against any conventional medical treatment. And you finally saw a specialist.
Doctor ‘shuttles’ in court
The action of this Klagenfurt specialist – who still has a private practice – is surprising: on the witness stand, the anesthesiologist and internist takes out a biotensor that resembles a silver pendulum and waves it at the prosecutor. “I’m not traveling, I have to,” the doctor explains seriously. He had examined Valerie in this way and found nothing organic: “The girl was healthy,” he says. To treat the tumor, which was the size of half an apricot, he administered infusions of cat’s claw and other “miracle drugs”. Three months later, Valerie was dead.
The process continues
It remains to be seen whether his treatment methods will have any consequences for the doctor. For the parents, the criminal proceedings initially ended with a conviction for torment by negligence – Judge Michaela Sanin imposed a one-year suspended prison sentence on each with a sentence of up to three years. Since the suspects immediately filed an appeal, it is now the turn of the Oberlandesgericht Graz.
