Integration is slow – there is little danger for those who skip German courses

Date:

Last year alone, more than 66,000 places were offered. Participation is mandatory. But the controls are difficult.

When discussing recipes for successful immigration or integration, language acquisition is always mentioned first. That is why suitable offers are of course important.

In Austria these are officially organized through the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF). And the supply or demand is constantly growing. Last year, 66,600 course places were offered throughout Austria. In Vienna alone there were 38,700. In the first quarter of 2024 there were already 18,100 places: an increase of seven percent.

Demand is increasing
Actually a successful project. Recognized asylum seekers or those entitled to subsidiary protection are in theory obliged to go there. After a positive decision, you must contact the ÖIF and sign a corresponding integration declaration. This requires mandatory participation in German and values courses.

There are no automated reports
The problem: Penalties for non-compliance usually only exist on paper. These provide for fines or prison sentences and even a reduction in social benefits. But there is no automatic comparison of the data. If a federal state does not ask whether its asylum seekers fulfill their obligations, there is nothing to fear.
