A devastating fire at a Croatian marina has destroyed at least 22 anchored boats. Eyewitnesses reported explosions in the port of Medulin. No one was injured. The damage is believed to amount to millions of euros.
Residents and visitors to the Istrian holiday resort were woken by several explosions shortly before 4am. A little later they saw the first boats go up in flames. The fire spread rapidly due to the strong wind. “This morning I woke up to an explosion. (…) Less than a few minutes later I heard another explosion, but of lesser intensity,” a resident reported on his Facebook page.
Some yachts were saved
Emergency services were immediately alerted and initially rescued yachts and smaller boats that had not been affected before they began extinguishing the fire. These were ready around 7am. The risk of fire to nearby buildings was also averted.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, but an investigation has already started. The damage caused will probably amount to millions of euros. Oil barriers were set up due to leaking operating fluids.
