The Tyrolean police now know who caused the fatal mountain accident at the Zuckerhütl on April 6. A victim suffers permanent damage. The Innsbruck Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating whether there is any criminal behavior.
That Saturday, an unknown mountaineer accidentally pushed an alpinist into a gully below the summit. As a result, five mountaineers fell and a South Tyrolean woman and her partner were injured. The 27-year-old will likely suffer permanent damage.
The person responsible went into hiding and the researchers started looking for the ‘phantom’ from the sugar loaf. At first it wasn’t even clear whether the “Phantom” was male or female. A call for witnesses in the “Krone” now led to the man who started the chain reaction.
Witness it immediately at the scene of the accident
“Shortly after the phone call, the Tyrolean mountaineering couple from whom we were hoping to get information came forward,” says Stephan Gröber, Alpine police officer in Neustift. The researchers had scored a direct hit. “The male witness was directly above the accident scene at the time of the accident and saw what happened in detail,” says Alpine police officer Gröber.
Ultimately, twelve people were interviewed who were involved in the accident or could provide information, including who caused it. The police provide no information about his origins. “The man did not take care of the injured, because there happened to be Stubai mountain rescuers on site who provided initial care,” says Stephan Gröber.
Now it is the prosecutor’s turn
The police are now sending the accident report to the Public Prosecution Service. “Just like in a traffic accident, personal injury can be possible due to negligence,” Gröber informs. It can also be about “abandoning the wounded”. The public prosecutor investigates whether there is actually criminal behavior.
