According to witnesses, the man left the Reichensteinhütte on the Eisenerzer Reichenstein towards the valley at 1 p.m., but never returned home. Shortly after 8 p.m., Alpine police and mountain rescue services began the search for the missing person.
Hiker spotted in a rubble field
About two hours later, around 10:15 p.m., a search party found the hiker in a debris field about 550 feet below the actual trail. According to the police, all help came too late for the 51-year-old and he died at the scene of the accident.
Body returned to the valley
Emergency services rescued the hiker and brought him to the valley. How the accident could have happened is the subject of an investigation. However, negligence by third parties is excluded, the Styrian Safety Directorate announced on Thursday morning.
