Fright for the children of a family from Villach: After just a few hours in their new home, two hamsters died – they had been sold sick. Only “Happy” is still alive (see photo above). What disease is behind it and why pets should only come from breeders.
They are cute and unfortunately often bought for children as a toy replacement – and then thrown away as a toy. Of course, there are responsible people who keep small animals in a species-specific manner and pass on the sense of respect for animals to their children.
Because the small animal trade is booming almost as much as the cheap puppy trade, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. often suffer terrible fates and are produced in mass farms – bred would be the wrong word. The family who had bought a hamster in good faith, which lay dead in the cage a few days later, also had to find out about this. And unfortunately it wasn’t a sad coincidence: the second hamster also died the next day.
