Four people, including migrants, were killed in a car accident in Croatia on Thursday while fleeing police. Five other passengers were injured, some seriously, when the car crashed into a wall.
The accident took place around 7 a.m. near the town of Sinj in the hinterland of Dalmatia. According to authorities, the driver of the car with a foreign license plate had previously evaded a police check.
The escape ended after a few kilometers at the wall
After escaping for a few kilometers, the driver entered an intersection at high speed, lost control and crashed into a wall. It was initially unclear whether the driver was also among the fatalities.
Police are looking for another smuggling vehicle
The five injured passengers were taken to hospital in Split. Four of them, including a child, suffered life-threatening injuries, the report said. Initially, the nationality of the migrants was determined. Authorities have now confirmed they are looking for another smuggling vehicle.
Croatia, which has been a member of the Schengen area since the beginning of this year, is located on the so-called Western Balkans route along which refugees try to reach the EU. The town of Sinj is located about 30 kilometers from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
