Drama in the Zillertal – The lifesaver was just a stone’s throw away

Date:

Due to fortunate circumstances, a Styrian holidaymaker (76) was successfully resuscitated in the Zillertal. Because the emergency occurred in the immediate vicinity of Andreas Schiestl, the district commander of the Red Cross. He was there immediately.

Dramatic scenes took place in the vicinity of the Fügen train station on the Zillertalbahn shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday. A 76-year-old holidaymaker from Styria suddenly collapsed on a bench. His wife and a passerby immediately began resuscitating the 76-year-old and raised the alarm.

Alarm 30 meters from the accident site
What no one could have known or hoped for: the alarm went off just 30 meters away across the street at the Hotel Malerhaus. This is run by the family of district rescue commander Andreas Schiestl. He also happened to be the operations manager on the day of the accident.

“I went there immediately and took over CPR,” says Schiestl. While the 36-year-old was caring for the patient, the emergency doctor from the Zillertal front and the ambulance arrived on the scene. At the same time, the emergency helicopter Heli 4 from Kaltenbach also approached. He was able to land easily in the adjacent field right next to the tracks.

Heli flew holidaymakers to the clinic
Andreas Schiestl continued resuscitation together with the emergency physician. “We successfully revived the patient within about ten minutes,” says the Fügener happily. The helicopter then flew the 76-year-old Styrian to the clinic in Innsbruck.

“In a situation like this, every minute, even every second, counts. It was really a very fortunate circumstance that as an operational manager I was so close to the patient,” says the district commander. He has never experienced such an operational situation before. “We are very well positioned in the Zillertal, but a case like this is an exception.”

Patient in intensive care
On Thursday the news came from the Innsbruck clinic that the patient was in intensive care. However, there was no further information about the holidaymaker’s condition.
